The Carlyle Hotel: Michael Jackson, Princess Di and JFK Slept There, Plus Other Secrets From NYC’s Famed Tower of Power

Brad Grey Checks Into NYC’s Carlyle Hotel
Paramount CEO Brad Grey Buys $15.5 Million Apartment in New York’s Carlyle Hotel (Exclusive)
Sierra Towers: The Secrets of L.A.’s Strange, Sexy Celebrity Condo Building
It was a quick elevator ride that occurred more than a decade ago in the Carlyle Hotel, New York’s old-world Art Deco bastion of elegance. During the mid-1990s, Dan Camp, then-president of the Upper East Side property, found himself in an elevator one evening with Princess Diana, a regular at the Carlyle. But things turned surreal when two other regulars boarded the lift: Steve Jobs and Michael Jackson. The three exchanged courtesies, and when the white-gloved elevator operator deposited the lift onto the ground floor, the riders went their separate ways. “This was the last thing in the world you would ever expect to happen,” says Camp, “but these kinds of things happened with some degree of regularity.”
The Carlyle, located a block from Central Park at 35 E. 76th St., long has been an A-list address for presidents, moguls and Hollywood icons alike. The 35-story tower, built in 1930 by developer Moses Ginsberg, stands apart because it includes a four-star hotel (188 rooms) and luxurious co-op residences (60). And the bevy of notables who have lived, stayed, dined and drunk there impart it with a mystique that is unmatched.
STORY: Paramount CEO Brad Grey Buys $15.5 Million Apartment in New York’s Carlyle Hotel
To wit: President Kennedy stayed at the Carlyle before and during his time in the White House, and stories persist of his dalliances there with Marilyn Monroe (an FBI memo includes allegations of sex parties held at the hotel that included Monroe and Frank Sinatra). Vera Wang opened her first bridal salon at the Carlyle in 1990. And for more than a decade, Woody Allen has played clarinet at the property’s Cafe Carlyle, which was long home to famed cabaret singer Bobby Short. Allen considers the building a “cultural landmark,” telling THR in an email interview that the Carlyle “carries on a great Manhattan tradition. It’s the kind of place you go to meet for drinks the way people used to in old New York romantic movies.”
Residents include IAC chairman Barry Diller and Paramount Pictures chairman Brad Grey, who first stayed as a guest before buying a $15.5 million unit at the property in November. And despite the big-name residents, there’s a tight-knit community at the Carlyle.
“It’s very friendly, it’s warm, it’s terrific,” says actress-singer Elaine Stritch (30 Rock), a longtime resident. “I love knowing people in the lobby. I just saw Jamie Lee Curtis last night; Barry Diller gives me a hug about once a week. That’s not hard to take.” And the hotel guests — past and present — are a who’s who of Hollywood: Steve McQueen, for example, used to stay there, and these days it’s frequented by the likes of George Clooney and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
But don’t expect anyone affiliated with the property to discuss any of this. And that’s part of the charm. “Every time I [look at] a daily review of our arrivals, it is unbelievable how many celebrities are going to that hotel — but you just don’t see them,” says Bob Boulogne, COO of Rosewood Hotels Resorts, which has managed the property since 2001, when it was purchased by Maritz Wolff Co. The St. Louis-based hotel investment group and part owner of Rosewood sold the Carlyle in July to the family of Hong Kong billionaire Cheng Yu-teng in a five-property, $570 million portfolio.
Observers expect the level of service — think: dog walkers, hand-delivered mail and personalized flower arrangements — to remain impressively high. Same goes for the prices. Rooms start at about $700 a night and top out at $15,000 for the Empire Suite, a three-bedroom duplex. And things remain as heady as ever on the residential side.
STORY: LA’s Newest Luxury Properties Struggle Through a Lethargic Market
Grey’s purchase of a four-bedroom unit that encompasses the tower’s entire 26th floor illustrates the premium the building often commands. The deal for the 3,000-square-foot apartment broke down to about $5,167 a square foot — roughly five times the price at which luxury condos in L.A. trade. But not every unit is so dear: A two-bedroom residence listed at $1.35 million recently sold, and in March, a two-bedroom, upper-floor unit was listed at $3.5 million. Properties that buyers cross shop include The Pierre and 15 Central Park West.
The monthly maintenance fees for residences at the Carlyle, which became a cooperative building in 1970, are staggering: Grey pays $37,946 a month. And a source with knowledge of the property says that fees start at about $7,500. “It’s all just great fun, and every three months they hit you with the bill, and it is terrifying,” says Stritch, who performs at Cafe Carlyle once a year. “That doesn’t get any laughs at all.”
The fees partly pay for exacting service from the staff of 420 employees. Residences are cleaned and turned down daily, and owners can order room service and use the spa. But the fees are high enough that they might scare off some prospective buyers, resulting in “relatively good values,” says Corcoran Group agent Patricia Cliff. “They are hard to sell because you are talking about a very, very restricted clientele.”
That clientele has left a trail of stories — some perhaps apocryphal. Private-equity firm Carlyle Group, which has ties to the Bush family and invests in defense and aerospace, got its name from the hotel after its founders met there during the 1980s to plot business plans. Others have used the Carlyle name, too: Ron Howard named his daughter Jocelyn Carlyle because she was conceived there. In 1995, Phil Spector allegedly pulled a gun on a photographer and tried to force her into his room, according to documents revealed in the music producer’s first murder trial for killing Lana Clarkson. And the final details of the Viacom-Paramount merger were hammered out there between Sumner Redstone and Martin Davis in 1993.
In June, a $350,000 Fernand Leger painting was stolen from the lobby. (The thief, Mark Lugo, was caught and in February sentenced to a stint in prison.) And in another legal matter, earlier this year, resident Murray Schwartz, former CEO of Merv Griffin Enterprises, sued the Carlyle over a water leak that caused more than $350,000 in damage to his home. He has alleged that workers stole valuables from his residence while repairing it, according to the New York Post. Carlyle management declined comment.
But some of the best stories speak to the odd assemblage of people who find their way to the Carlyle. Frank Bowling, a former vp at the Carlyle and now ambassador for the Montage Beverly Hills, says he recently spied French President Nicolas Sarkozy leaving for a jog followed by what looked liked “a soccer team.” But the hulking group was just his security detail. And over the years, lucky Bemelmans Bar imbibers have been treated to surprise performances by Tony Bennett, who occasionally will hop onstage when singer and friend Barbara Carroll has a gig.
Then there is the aforementioned Camp, now an art collector, who recalls an encounter in which he found himself introducing President Reagan to the King of Pop near the lobby’s bank of four elevators. “You could tell they were both standing there and wanted to meet each other and didn’t know how to go about it. It is a terribly eclectic group of people that stays there.”

Marlo Hampton Opens Up About Fight With Sheree & Where Her Money Comes From; Plus Sheree Insists She Did Not Throw Kandi Under The Bus!
Marlo Hampton wants you to know there is more to her than designer labels! Atlanta’s most contested and derided housewife is speaking out about who she really is and defending herself to the critics.
To start out, Marlo also says she never cared that her then-boyfriend Charles Grant allegedly dated co-star (and now friend) NeNe Leakes and she came on the show with an open-mind. “The girls wanted it to be something major,” she insists. But she does care about how she is portrayed on the Real Housewives of Atlanta!
She is also happy she was able to participate in the trip to South Africa, despite the unsavory taste it left in most viewer’s mouths. Marlo calls the trip to Africa “a life experience,” save for the argument she had with Sheree Whitfield. “I hate that that happened,” she muses to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I would not have cared about her inviting me to the party, because I know that Sheree doesn’t really care for me too much, whatever. But, after we sat on the boat and we’re all like “Hey, we’re going to bond, at least when we see each other we’re going to speak, we’re going to be cordial,” I’m like, OK, we’re starting off on a new foot, we’re connecting,” Marlo explains.
“So as soon as we get back to the room, you call Cynthia [Bailey] over and invite Cynthia and not me, really? Sheree, seriously? Where we just left 30 minutes ago saying “Oh, we’re going to try to get along,” so that really just shocked me. And then we started the argument, I guess the part that blew me was when she was like, “Oh don’t go there, you’re dating an 80-year-old white man.” I just lost it.”
She does regret using the word “faggot” during the course of her rage. “I feel absolutely awful,” she admits. “When I said the ‘f-word,’ this wasn’t on camera, but I was crying, I was so pissed off and frustrated.”
Marlo says her sister is gay, along with her assistant and she is deeply involved in the community. “I called home to Daniel, my assistant who’s gay. I just told him about the whole thing about Sheree, I mean, I just felt awful, I mean, I was upset like that whole night.”
And she wants you to know using the word isn’t as bad as one might think! “But the only thing about it, when I talked to Lawrence [Washington] about it, he told me a ‘faggot’ was a gay messy male. And I did know that guy was being messy, but he’s like ‘Marlo, you cannot say that, though, you’re not gay. It’s like a man calling you the B-word.’”
“I did apologize, my friends love me and they know I was just talking, and I’m just trying to build that relationship back with the gay community, because, I mean that was awful, I really feel bad about that.”
As for how she earns the money to pay for all that Lu-wee VooTAWN, Marlo insists she used to work and she’s really good at investing! “ I mean, from work, and I did own and found the Red Carpet Boutique at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta for three years, which I just closed when I started taping with Bravo.”
“Of course, I have been spoiled by my boyfriends,” she adds. “The main part is that I invested my money.”
“I wasn’t crazy, I didn’t have to spend on everything. My home is paid for, my vehicles are paid for… I came from nothing to where I never want to go back to being a foster child, being homeless, or being in the projects, and just struggling, and not knowing where my next meal was going to come from. I don’t want to go back to that.”
Marlo admits she was “puzzled” by Kandi Burruss asking her about the source of her income. She believs Kandi is so concerned about her cash flow because she’s jealous! “It’s jealousy and envy, that’s what it was. I mean, it’s got to be jealousy and envy, something, Lord — women with low self-esteem only,” she insists.
“The gay men love me, men love me, and strong-minded women love me, who have high self-esteem. Only the low self-esteem women have a problem with me, and it’s like, “Why? What is your problem?” Just because I love fashion, my story is different from yours, my occupation is different from yours, what is the problem?”
And speaking of boyfriends who take care of you, Marlo insists she actually likes Kim Zolciak and wasn’t trying to “jab” her with all the Big Poppa talk during Cynthia’s modeling school opening. “When I originally met Kim, she was so nice and sweet and talking to me, but I wasn’t trying to pull a jab. It came off like one though, but I really wasn’t.”
“I said I had a Big Poppa,” Marlo clarifies. “I feel like, it wasn’t even about you Kim. And she has a past herself, and her comments about me have been inappropriate, but it is what it is. But it wasn’t targeted towards her. But her comments about me are inappropriate, that’s what’s crazy.”
Finally Sheree is speaking out about why she decided to tell Kim about Kandi and Cynthia’s comments in Africa! And she is defending her decision to spill the beans, claiming it was all about loyalty! “I believe in friendship, I believe in loyalty. If you say something, you need to own it.”
Sheree admits that she initially misspoke about who made the comment. “I stand corrected: Cynthia did make the initial comment about Kim, but Kandi immediately agreed with her.”
“Only that wasn’t shown. No one watching at home realized that Kandi had agreed with Cynthia. Hopefully, they’ll air the entire conversation during the reunion.”
As for Kandi’s accusations that Sheree threw her under the bus, Sheree dismisses that as ridiculous. ” I told Kim about the incident while Kandi was standing right there next to me — so I wasn’t throwing anyone under the bus. I just strongly believe that if you say something behind someone’s back, you should be able to say it to their face.”
Sheree tells Wetpaint she was more angry that Kandi agreed with Cynthia’s comment – particularly since Cynthia isn’t close with any of the ladies involved. “Cynthia and Kim aren’t close. There’s no loyalty there — they’re not friends,” Sheree reveals. “But Kandi is supposed to be Kim’s friend — and I thought it was strange that she was agreeing with Cynthia on a sentiment that was basically insulting Kim and implying she could possibly be racist.”
The decision to call Kim was made by the producers according to Sheree, but she decided to tell Kim what was discussed in the jeep. “After the jeep ride, the producers asked us to call Kim, so we did,” she claims she didn’t mention Cynthia’s involvement in the conversation because she and Kim “aren’t close,” but Kandi and Kim are “close friends.” After Tardy For The Party? I beg to differ!
“Kim was thankful that I mentioned it,” Sheree explains. “She knows I’m not messy person. Most real friends would appreciate that.” As for her relationship with Kandi, the two are good now, but things were tense for a while.
The conversation continues next episode when Kim confronts Kandi and a blow-out fight happens!
THOUGHTS ON MARLO’S INTERVIEW? DO YOU BELIEVE SHE WORKED HARD AND SAVED HER MONEY? DO YOU BELIEVE SHEREE TOLD KIM ABOUT KANDI’S COMMENTS OUT OF LOYALTY? WAS SHEREE IN THE WRONG TO DO SO?
Bethenny Frankel Announces Talk Show Will Debut On Jun 11! Opens Up About Miscarriage and Health Issues
It’s been a big week for Bethenny Frankel, but I’ve come to learn that every week is a big week when you’re a Skinnygirl with anything and everything on your plate…and that plate is seen by a gazillion viewers, followers, haters, and fans. Oddly enough (and I didn’t think it was odd at all until my dear friend–a true Fan-kel–pointed it out to me over cocktails), I have no opinion on Bethenny. Whatsoever.
I think she’s savvy and smart. I think she’s equally annoying. I love her clothes. I hate her brashness, but I think I’m secretly jealous of it. She is the one reality star that should push my buttons–good or bad–but doesn’t. That said, I am following her current reports much more closely because I am equal parts saddened by her heartbreaking news, intrigued by her ability to garner such strong reactions, and a ridic lover of bad daytime talk shows. Quite the combo!
After the new season of Bethenny Ever After premiered Monday night, the reality maven was a guest on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live. In between drinking games and pleading the fifth, Bethenny spoke about her, much touted, new foray into the realm of daytime chitchat. Following this announcement on WWHL, The Hollywood Reporter expanded on Bethenny’s growing empire.
The star, known for her sharp tongue and keen business skill, revealed to Andy Cohen that her new talk show, Bethenny, will premiere June 11th on Fox. Citing the premise of her show, she opined, “Instead of watching my marriage, my sex life, my conversations about money, I want to involve you.” Hmmm, I am not sure I want to be involved in ALL that, but I’m curious nonetheless.
Bethenny continued, “It’s a girlfriends show, but it’s really honest…[j]ust what’s really going on, have an honest conversation without it being just me being in the fishbowl. I want to involve everyone in the conversation.” It sounds, well just fabulous! When she stated she planned on having celebrity guests as well, I was sold. Now if only I could quit my day job, so I can sit home to watch it…
The one-hour daily program is being produced by Telepictures Productions, with Bethenny and Ellen DeGeneres serving as executive producers. I do love some Ellen! The Frankel/Hoppy clan will be spending some time in Burbank, as that is where the show will be taped.
Additionally, it will get a special preview in test markets for six weeks. Those of you lucky enough to live in New York and Los Angeles will be among the first viewers. Wendy Williams was successful with a similar strategy. If Bethenny prevails on these selected stations, she will be in good company on the daytime talk circuit. It was reported that Jeff Probst, Katie Couric, and Steve Harvey will also be joining the increasing crowded world of sofa chats, cooking segments, and book clubs.
And speaking of book clubs, Madame Frankel has had three lifestyle and nutrition books to hit the New York Times’ bestseller list. She is now taking the plunge (get it?) into fiction as her first novel, Skinnydipping, will hit the shelves May 1.
While in the clubhouse, Bethenny also opened up about her recent miscarriage and some resulting health issues. Earlier Monday morning, she revealed her tragic ordeal on the TODAY Show when asked if she had plans for more children. A tearful Bethenny responded, “We were pregnant with a second baby, and at eight weeks, I miscarried.”
Understandably, Bethenny, who is the mother to 21-month-old Bryn with husband Jason Hoppy, has been struggling during such a difficult time. She shared, “There are so many…things that come with [miscarrying]. You go through a roller coaster of emotions…[a]bout your age, about being a woman, about, can you have another baby, are you a failure to your partner? You go through a million different things.”
On WWHL, she revealed to Andy, “As a result of [the miscarriage], I was on an antibiotic Doxycycline. I took it at night without any water, went to bed and it burned a hole in my esophagus. I have a hole in my heart and my esophagus.” She retorts, “But it’s okay — I’m feeling good. I wouldn’t be drinking a Skinnygirl Margarita if I weren’t feeling good!”
I’m glad to see she still has her signature cocktail and signature sense of humor. Our thoughts are with Bethenny and her family.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BETHENNY’S REVELATIONS? WILL YOU BE WATCHING HER NEW TALK SHOW?
Lindsay Lohan Playing Elizabeth Taylor In Lifetime Movie? Star In Talks
Cue the backlash in 3… 2… 1…
Most recently seen posing nude in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired Playboy shoot, Lindsay Lohan may be headed back to classic Hollywood to play Elizabeth Taylor. With her clothes on.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Lohan is in early talks to play Liz in a movie in a Lifetime movie that has been in the works since May. Taylor passed away in March.
Lohan has been in the news largely for her legal troubles the past few years; starting in 2007 with a misdemeanor DUI, she’s violated the terms of her probation on a number of occasions, leading to various jail stays, the most recent in November. She spent just 4 1/2 hours behind bars in her last stint due to overcrowding, and has been working court-mandated hours at a morgue and attending therapy.
Taylor, one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses, is also set to be portrayed, at least in a round about way, by Angelina Jolie, who has long been committed to starring in a remake of Taylor and Richard Burton’s disastrous film “Cleopatra.” It was reported in June that Martin Scorsese had optioned the film rights to “Furious Love,” a book about Taylor and Burton’s storied and troubled love.
