Rogue Apple Exec Trashes Rivals’ ‘Mediocre Engineers’ [Exclusive]
It’s amazing that Phillip Shoemaker still works at Apple. The app store director obsessed with porn and escorts, as we reported yesterday, has also used Twitter to attack execs at rival companies and media critics, we’ve learned. More »

@Prostate of Grace: It goes both ways. That PC guy is always kind of a jerk to the Mac guy. In fact, the Mac guy is usually pretty cool about it.
(kidding)

@myxylplyx: Yeap… this isn’t journalism. It’s a personal vendetta.
James Hills
@myxylplyx: You got that right. Any time you see a picture of Steve Jobs, 9 times out of 10 it’s Ryan Tate ranting against Apple. It’s such a broken record.
MadEye
In other words, a person who Jobs can afford to get rid of because anyone can do the shit talking monkey gig.
A.Jaswal
did he forget that the library of congress is backing up all of twitter?
quicksilver8478
The Gawker folks really have it in for this guy.
myxylplyx
@BellaBellini: Couldn’t have said it better myself.
slowurroll
This doesn’t surprise me at all. People in favour of censorship of pornography are always the biggest perverts out there.
There is nothing wrong with being a pervert, but there is definitely something wrong with being a hypocrite.
BellaBellini
Excellent article, Ryan. I’m thinking that Shoemaker’s career at Apple is not going to be a long one.
iTofu 3GS has no reception problems
@GetSomeMore: heh heh. maybe one thing then.
fury161
@fury161: Except a metal spatula.
GetSomeMore
I was going to click the link to the wired article about Steve Jobs being anti porn, but then I noticed the link ended with “Steve-Jobs-Porn” and decided against it.
KefkaticFanatic
Apple is teflon. nothing will chip its armor of greatness.
fury161
This guy [www.engadget.com] THIS GUY is running the app store? Seriously? I don’t usually swear in my posts but fuck me, what rock did they find him under?!
pjcard
@AnneV6: I find irony in Google Cache.
Google puts 4chan’s claim of never forgetting to shame.
Jaredu
@talkingstove: I can’t fairly attest to the body of Hewitt’s work, and I’m sure there are plenty of areas in which he has excelled, but I don’t think the Facebook app should count as evidence of his abilities.
tomsomething
When you say “it’s amazing”, do you mean “we can’t believe he hasn’t been fired over all the dirt we keep digging up and slinging”?
MikeK
So lemme get this straight…
He’s a shit talking hypocrite with a type-A personality, and really likes poonani.
He’s no Gandhi, I’ll give you that. But, isn’t he just like a gazillion other dudes walking the halls of any major corporation on the planet?
DustyButt
Apple’s drunk on its own marketshare, and, apparently, it’s kind of an asshole when it’s drunk.
GRIZZZLY
@meske: Apple did go pretty hard at Gawker site Gizmodo’s writer Jason Chen over that iPhone 4 recovery/theft/purchase issue.
The guy is obviously a douche but he’s Apple’s douche. If anything this latest attack is complimentary. Who at Apple is going to disparage the guy in management who’s tweeting as good or better than any Apple fanboy on the entire interweb? I’d give him a promotion. He’s a believer.
Snafu77
Seriously, God bless Google cache. Am I right?
AnneV6
“It takes a thief to catch one.”
Solid theory. It really might help Jobs out to let someone with a questionable history reside in that “choke point.” That way when someone has to deal with the shit, no clean hands get dirty. And, when the Jobs’ done (<-see what I did there with the two meanings? hehe), Shoemaker can be an excellent scapegoat, even being fired for it.

@cocob:
Snafu77
So has Gawker decided it’s going to be its mission to get this guy fired now?
NaraVara
Trashing rivals? Sounds pretty consistent with corporate culture.
Prostate of Grace
I like this guy
MacAttack
This is pretty incredible. It just shows that in our information heavy, social world you always have to make sure you say things that you won’t have trouble justifying or defending if it comes up down the road.
toddw1
Every new iteration of Apple hardware has issues…iTunes runs like a piece of bloated crap…and he is calling out other company engineers?
Akio Morita
What I find most interesting is that a single email chain between Steve Jobs and a half drunk reporter somehow evolved into “Steve Jobs’ campaign against bad taste & porn.”
Seems to me if that were truly the case he’d do a lot more than block adult apps & flash on the iPhone.
Still doesn’t detract from Shoemaker being an idiot.

“a whole other”?
Silly, everyone knows it’s “a whole ‘nother”
BootHillBossanova
Wouldn’t have an iphone if you paid me. Been meaning to thank Jobs for the rise in Ebook pricing. Maybe I can borrow that Twitter account.
mediamover
I’m “friends” with an MS employee on facebook, he routinely does this, and when I called him on his BS, he didn’t like it, and said he gives competitors the benefit of the doubt. I saw his one reference, and it was barely a nod.
Either way, this was his personal account, not representing Apple, he probably should have kept it more anonymous than he did.
musiqrulez
In other news, American unemployment is at 22%.
I sure am glad at least HIS position is secure.
Back to you, Ryan…
empty.bin
Well, at least Apple has top notch engineers that do not get black out drunk and lose prototypes and/or design phones with faulty antennas….
spinnaker0
Well, was he right about Wolff fabricating his tale of the rejected app?
BorderRat
Finally someone realizes how decent this guy is. Jobs wants a guy to be able to find the hidden apps that have teether apps hidden inside them. I bet Mr. Shoemaker reads Giz. So sir I don’t have an iPhone but if you guys put an iPhone on the Sprint network then I’m all in. I always laugh when people put stories about apps that allow you do things the phone was not meant to do like teethering then instantly that app will get yanked off the store. This guy is obviously the alter ego of Jobs. Now I bet if it was up to Shoemaker you would have a porn app section, but since Jobs doesn’t want that he’s been a crazy ass hawk when it comes to porn. I’m shocked the roellete app (sp) is still up, but you know Mr. Shoemaker loves it because it lets people do some very cool sex stuff right right..wink wink nudge nudge…huh huh? Anyway, no God help Apple if Mr. Shoemaker is promoted to take over Apple if Jobs died or something because I bet he would scream in his first speech PORN FOR EVERYONE!!!!!
saxgod
@tomsomething: I don’t use the app that much, but calling Joe Hewitt mediocre is sort of laughable. He has been a part of so much successful and great software (one of the original developers of Firefox and the developer of Firebug) that lashing out against him just seems dumb. Especially when all we’ve seen from this guy are piss and fart apps.
talkingstove
Seems right up there with the level of wisdom and intelligence displayed by most Mac fanboys.
hawkeye18
You know what? I love Shoemaker for being this way! Enough of the pc, walking-on-eggshells bullshit! We need more of this! At th enext Apple keynote, I wanna see El Jobso Loco dry hump a blow-up sheep doll with a picture of Shantanu Narayen’s face taped to it!
5erge
Why so harsh on this guy? Did he wrong someone at Gawker?
meske
Man, what did this guy ever do to you? It’s like cyber-bullying, or I guess journalistic truism right? Geez.
mykalt45
Does anyone else see the angel of death hovering over Steve’s shoulder?
cocob
The Facebook app’s popularity and appeal come from its necessity to exist, not from its features and interface. I haven’t downloaded last night’s update, but previous version have all been very disappointing.
