Thank you JAY for remind the rest of the country that our infrastructure need an overhaul and is going to take qualified workers with special skills to do the job.
Jobs that cant be outsourced and have to be done sooner than later by Welders who are a special kind of people that are not afraid of the hard work and take pride on their job.

I got my first job as a welder making $16.75/hr. I knew the basics, But Wasnt very skilled. I could mig weld, But that was about it. I learned the tricks of the trade from some old timers in the shop, and actually got to the point where when a job came in, people came striaght to me because they knew i’d do it right.. Got laid off from the place, Now i have my own shop. Work is slow right now, but when i’m busy, the money is great. I’m 24 years old and i Couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

The country is falling apart because we don’t understand that the life cycle cost of a project includes CONSTRUCTION, UPKEEP, and DECOMMISSIONING. Each of those parts have their own significant cost.

But we only fund the construction part because it gives incumbent politicians something to say “hey! look what I accomplished this term! Vote for ME!”

More of the American “use it, throw it away, and buy another one, it ain’t my problem anymore” mentality. We need a different attitude, first.

  • spetch21 says:

I work in an oilfield repair shop. $50 an hour. No pipe. Jobs are out there just need to look and be willing to move.

  • mrmikesims says:

thats great if your welding for jay leno. ive been welding for 22 years. i have 6-6g welding certs, and blacksmithed for 13 yrs. but every time i go on craigslist or other welder job postings around the country, all i see is “need experienced welder pay-$14-17 per hr DOE” is this where a life time of perfecting my craft has lead? hey jay, how bout a job? welders need to stop excepting these jobs until the companies have no choice but to offer more. unfortunatly we also have to feed our families.

  • ccriderish says:

sorry people I dont know where thses welders live but my husband has been a welder for 32 years and has 5 certs, he has been laid off 4,6 months now. we live in n. calif. and the most hes ever made welding is 17.oo hr. so word of advice if your gonna weld become union, and dont live in n. calif.

  • diablo699900 says:

According to studies. By this time next year, 2010, once all of the welders that are in class now have graduated or whatever and go to work, there will be shortage of 200,000 welders. that is world wide. So get that certification and get welding. Pipe is wehre the money is. Unless you do some kind of specialty welding. then the money is endless. (save save save)

  • diablo699900 says:

PIPE PIPE PIPE. And shipyards. Charleston, S.C. is paying 25 + an hour. Norflok shipyards are paying 50 + for Nickel and Copper welding.

  • JonnyTommyGuns says:

The fact is nothing is 100% secure and NEVER will be.

  • LemonInYourEye says:

    inspiring…sort of

  • exiledred77 says:

my point was related to the fact that the auto industry just went tits up, and the construction industry is suffering hard too. They are by far the highest employer of welders. I was laid off from building aerial scissor lifts myself, I know a lot of unemployed welders right now, so if you want to point them to this endless source of work, be my guest.
